Extinction of Desi Games
Desi Games like Gilli Danda, Kanche, Langdi etc used to be very popular in India in the 90s and early 2000s. Especially in rural areas, these games used to be played everywhere. Even in cities, people used to enjoy such sports and leisure activities.
Such games used to play a major role in the overall personality development of a person. Children used to be connected with nature. They used to learn about teamwork, coordination and much more.
But as technology has grown these games are on the verge of extinction. They have completely been extinct from cities. Although it is rare in rural areas to see children playing these games. Mobile Phones in the hands of every child are said to be the reason for such extinction. Most children have shifted from playing outdoor sports to virtual games. The popularity of battle royale games like PUBG, Free Fire, and Fortnite shows that.
Strict parenting is also a major reason for the downfall of desi games. Parents want their children to be more focused on study. So, they usually did not allow their kids to play outside. These games often used to be associated with low-class games, so in cities these desi games were less successful than in villages. Strict time schedules in schools and after-school tuition can also be a reason.
These games should be encouraged as they tell us to stay connected with nature. Such desi games have been a part of our culture for a very long time. Forgetting such games will mean that we are leaving behind a part of our beautiful culture.
